The
seams that really hold camp together and ensure a memorable experience
for the children are our volunteers.
Each year a handful of dedicated caring individuals step forward
to share their knowledge and passions with the children at Camp Border
Collie for Kids. We need
people with experience teaching children in nature oriented settings
where the days are filled with activities , both play and educational.
All of our activities are best led by people interested in
sharing new information with the kids because the enthusiasm is
contagious.
The Farm and country experience, out in nature, is completely foreign
to these children, so guided "teaching" has an incredibly positive
impact. |
|
At camp we do not
place focus on perfection or competition and we do not expect that from
our volunteers either.
We purposely do not
run a highly structured camp environment. In many cases we create
the day on the day…with a belief that a “looser” format better
suits our objectives. |
 |
 |
 |
| Offering a few days of
your time with these kids is an extremely relaxed and rewarding
opportunity for you to make a difference in their overall camp
experience. You can be part of the magic that takes place at Camp
Border Collie for Kids simply by volunteering a small part of your
summer. |
All of our
volunteers can:
- Bring
their dog(s), provided that the dog(s) are good with kids and other
dogs
- Attend
all meals with the campers
- Attend
all activities with the campers
- Use
Glen Highland Farm facilities which include: beautifully groomed
trails, fresh water creek, spring-fed pond, agility equipment, and
more!!!

| COOKIN' FOR THE SUMMER
(Position filled for the 2008
Camp)
Want to spend August in a very
special way at Glen Highland Farm? We need someone with simple cooking
skills to serve two meals a day to very hungry kids in Camp
Border Collie for Kids! The meals you cook are often the best food
these kids eat all year. No kidding!
Inner city children need a hearty
breakfast and a delicious dinner and we need the person to make that
happen!
Details: the meals are cooked on a
large barbecue fire-pit so it's a bit like being a short-order cook. You
start the fire before each meal; cook and clean up.
There are extra hands to help with
clean-up of course. Lunch is handled by counselors, giving the cook time
to shop or rest, both surely needed. The cook is housed in an RV or cabin,
on site, in the kids's area.

Previous cooks say it's the best
experience being with the kids and dogs and staying at the Farm to help
out. But, it's hard work so requires a down-to-earth person with a great
sense of humor! You know how picky kids can be!
The position of Camp
Cook will be for the month of August with two people
covering 15 days each. There will be a modest stipend paid as well as
travel expenses will be reimbursed. Dogs are welcome to come if they are
kid friendly and good with other dogs since the camp has plenty of both!

Nature
Study (Position filled for the 2008
Camp) Along with the dog program, nature study is a large focus of Camp Border
Collie for Kids. While in the
remarkable surroundings of Glen Highland Farm, we try to immerse the
campers as much as possible into nature while also teaching them about
wildlife. In the past we have had expert volunteers who have a
range of backgrounds, from high school Biology teachers to staff from the
National Audubon Society. At
the end of the nature study program, the campers walk away with a newfound
respect for nature and wildlife as well as a plethora of facts. |
Details are as
follows:
- We
are looking for volunteer who have an extensive knowledge of nature
and the outdoors
- Are
able to create fun activities involving nature. Past examples include:
nature walks, birdhouse building, butterfly study, stream
study, bird watching, bird banding, and more
- Have
access to equipment for use during nature study program (ie: nets for
use in stream, microscope, etc.)
- Can
devote around three days of time for teaching/activities

We do not place
emphasis on competition nor do we expect for the camper-dog teams to be able
to run an agility course by the end of the program.
The emphasis of the
agility program is on relationship and confidence building. |
